Become a Member

Becoming a firefighter with the Wayside Fire Company is an exciting opportunity to become an important part of the community and assist your neighbors in a time of need.

How Do I Sign Up?

Every potential member needs to fill out an application which can be downloaded by visiting www.waysidefirecompany.com/images/districtapplication.pdf, or picked up at the Wayside Firehouse located at 2 Volunteer Way. Additionally, if you wish to speak to someone prior to filling out an application, please contact the Fire Chief at 732-493-4466.

Once your application is submitted and reviewed, you must submit your fingerprints and drivers license to the Tinton Falls Police Department for a background check. After your background check has been completed, a medical physical paid for by the Fire Commissioners is required to ensure that you are physically able to perform your duties as a volunteer firefighter.

Upon successful completion of the background investigation and medical physical an interview will be scheduled with the Fire Chief and he will review the operations of the fire department, required training and so on. From that point the Fire Company accepts you as a member and your career as a firefighter begins. The entire application process usually takes about 30 to 45 days from the time you submit your application.

Until your interview, here is some background on the Fire Company

The primary purpose of the fire company is to respond to calls for fire/rescue emergencies in an effort to save life and property. Fire and rescue emergencies include such responding to various types of fires, fire alarms, motor vehicle accidents and various other situations.

There are many different kinds of fire/rescue calls.

  • Fire Alarm – many homes and business have fire detection equipment. When it is activated it is transmitted to the 9-1-1 center as an alarm, 9-1-1 dispatches the fire company as if the alarm is an actual working fire.
  • Carbon Monoxide Alarm – Treated as a hazardous condition the fire company has an arsenal of detection equipment for carbon monoxide and the ability to mitigate an incident with carbon monoxide.
  • Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA) – when multiple cars hit each other, or when a car strikes another object (pedestrian, telephone pole, etc). These incidents sometimes have hazardous materials leaks such as gasoline or involved entrapped injured patients that require the fire company to utilize tools such as the “Jaws of Life”.
  • Structure Fire –when a home or other type of structure has a fire within.
  • Mutual Aid – Calls to other municipalities; Wayside provides mutual aid to surrounding communities including Naval Weapons Station Earle, Neptune Township, and Ocean Township.

The Wayside Fire Company is just one of the four fire Companies in the Borough of Tinton Falls. The other three companies are: Pine Brook Fire Company (36-3), Tinton Falls Fire Company (36-1) and Northside Fire Company (36-4). The Wayside Fire Company and Pine Brook Company are under the auspices of the Board of Fire Commissioners of Fire District #1. Both Tinton Falls Fire Company and Northside Fire Company fall under the auspices of Fire District #2.The four fire companies work together to ensure that the Borough of Tinton Falls is served with adequate fire protection.

The most important thing to remember is that this is a professional volunteer organization. Everyone puts in whatever time they can spare, but we do expect that when you make a commitment to perform some duty, you follow through with it.

We look forward to hearing from you!
